Homeless Pets Foundation deeply appreciates the services that our volunteers provide. We welcome you as part of our team. As a volunteer, we strongly urge you to consult with your own physician regarding the following:

I have read and understand Homeless Pets Foundation’s Rules & Procedures for Dog Walking Volunteers. I acknowledge that I am at least 18 years of age. I hereby release Homeless Pets Foundation from any and all liability for any personal injury which I may sustain and/or any damage and/or loss to my personal property during the course of my activities as a volunteer.
If under the age of 18, my parent or guardian will sign below and accompany me at all times while volunteering with Homeless Pets Foundation.

Rules & Procedures for Dog Walking Volunteers
By providing needed exercise and individual attention to shelter dogs, you help to relieve the stress of kennel life and thus make them more adoptable.
Qualifications
· Minimum age - 18 years. No minors may walk dogs unless accompanied by an adult guardian
· A genuine concern for animals and an expressed desire to work in accordance with the policies and philosophy of Homeless Pets Foundation.
· Having some experience and feeling comfortable in handling dogs of various sizes and temperaments.
· Having the physical ability to handle large dogs.
Procedure
· Before being authorized to walk dogs, you must be interviewed and evaluated. You must be found to be responsible and able to walk dogs of varying energy levels and temperaments.
· Dogs will be assigned to you that fit your capabilities.
Duties
· Walking dogs in designated areas for no less than 15 minutes.
· Observing each dog's behavior, noting highlights as well as potential problems and later indicating on the dog’s chart or advising supervisor.
· Dogs may be walked only during hours approved by Homeless Pets Foundation. You must request permission in advance to keep a dog for an extended period of time.
· Do NOT take out a dog that does not respond favorably to you.
· Always walk a dog on leash - never off leash.
· Avoid approaching a dog in a manner that might be construed by the dog as threatening (for example, making eye contact at the dog's level, approaching from behind, etc.)
· Keep the dog away from other people and their dogs.
· When more than one shelter dog is being walked at the same time, they must be kept apart unless it is known that they are compatible. Never let their leashes cross, so that you can pull them apart quickly if necessary.
· When watering a dog, you will not allow them to share the same water bowl at the same time, as they may exhibit food aggression. Ensure water bowl is always full.
· You must carry a "poop bag" and clean up any waste left by the dog.
· The dog must stay on leash while being put back into its cage. Once the dog is in the cage, the leash can be removed.
Time Commitment
· Scheduling to be arranged in advance. You should always notify Homeless Pets Foundation if you are unable to come at your designated time and/or want to reschedule your time.
